Coaster #20: Superman

Coaster 20 commemorates this week's anniversary of Superman becoming a daily newspaper strip. On January 16, 1939  the Houston Chronicle published "Superman Comes To Earth".
(I'm not loving this interpretation as much as I liked  the Batman logo in an earlier entry.)

coaster #16: "We've come a long way from the Prime Minister's exploding cake. Or have we?"

tonight's coaster celebrates batman coming to television...46 years ago.  i like the idea of seeing logos in unexpected fabrics like this--very fun.

yes, this is the same glass of wine from last night and the same wine.
you can probably smell it from where you are, it's been a'fermentin!
so, with whatever it has turned into, here's to you, adam west!

coaster #15: Major League Baseball Rule 6.10

what do you do the day after you have a migraine and you barely remember how to form words but you want to make a second coaster so that you're at the one-a-day amount? if you stumble upon history.com like i did, you'll be making one commemorating the voting in of the designated hitter rule in baseball--January 11, 1973 . i'm not sure that there is anything more i can say. nope. this says it all. right there.

apparently, ron blomberg of the new york yankees became the first designated hitter a few months later, on april 6.  cheers to you, mr. blomberg!

coaster #14: migraine me

yesterday was another day that went coasterless and that's because i had a horrible migraine. i did. i'm upset that it happened so early in the new year.
so tonight i made two coasters but since they're unrelated, they'll each get their own post.

this is migraine me, above, but as if i still had all brown hair which i do not.
it's a blogger's prerogative to pretty herself up for the public.

i could see how a coaster like this could come in very handy for a party's host/hostess. when a guest is on their way to another drink too many, you switch up their coaster to something like this.
I could call them "Last Call Coasters."

coaster 13 and coaster 14: nyc

these coasters are sewn  from two of my very favorite fabrics ever in the world. both can be purchased at the city quilter. i backed them up with a strong clay colored denim. i took the photos on a chair which is why they aren't flat.

coaster #11: cafe beyond

today's coaster is another found paper coaster.

it comes from this glossy menu that's available at cafe beyond, the eatery that's inside bed, bath & beyond on 6th avenue and 18th st.  i picked the menu up this morning while i was getting a toasted corn muffin, but it's lunch that i usually have here. salads, burritos, baked potatoes, pasta, soup--it's one of my top 3 places, easily.

it was a bit too glossy for a coaster, so i lightly sandpapered it down which gave it a nice, distressed look. then i glued the cutout onto a blank cardboard coaster.
that's what i call coasteriffic!

coaster #10: sun with french knots

i got this sun fabric at a garage sale during the summer. you probably can't see it on the screen, but it's very shimmery, a really nice piece. i added  eight french knots to the outer circle just to give it a little bit of a color pop and a little bit of texture.  i'm liking this fine.

here's the back of the coaster.

the cats seem to want to get in on the action and kish, who is really the scaredy cat, joined me tonight for the coaster making fun. what a handsome boy he is!

kish, so far things have worked out fine in the testing of the coasters and i hope that tonight you'll witness another  thumbs up result.

: )

coaster #9: keys coaster

today a very simple coaster using some great new key fabric.

can't forget that what i'm making also has a function. will it work?

nash could barely stand the final moments of the coaster's testing phase.
hey, nash! not to worry! we have another working coaster!

coaster #8: festival of sleep coaster

according to the folks over at holidayinsights.com, January 3rd is the Festival of Sleep Day. It is "...an opportunity to sleep in, snooze, doze, nap, and catch 40 winks." this would be the right coaster to use when i wake wake up at 3:00 am. "should i go on the computer?" "should I sew?"
no. take the advice of a coaster. "go to sleep"

the back of the festival of sleep coaster

i was a little bit tired when i took these photos. too tired--STILL--to take that nail polish off of my thumb.

but never too tired to celebrate another coaster that works!

coaster #7: scrappy flower 2

well it was on my mind since yesterday to make another scrappy flower coaster using better colors/fabric. and--unlike yesterday's blue--i outlined the parts with black thread. big improvement. i really really like making these...i might not be able to stop myself.
and i know what you're saying: "yesterday's coaster wasn't so good looking but, sue, it WORKED!
ok. lets GO THERE!

i have about five fruit punch gatorades left over from when i saw the intestinal guy. he thought i wasn't absorbing fluids so well. i know, why bring that up here?
you're right. i just wanted to explain why i have gatorade.

it works!

coaster #6: scrappy flower

i can see where my color/fabric selection could have been better--the green leaves are lost against the green background-- but it was so much fun making coaster #6 and i'm excited to make more like this. i found them at the jolly bee. she  started off using a tutorial over at chasing cottons. but jolly bee made them wonderfully scrappy and outlined everything in black thread (where i used blue) as she saw in a book called "Scandinavian Stitches".

i agree with you, jolly bee. these are the happiest coasters ever.
but, you didn't mention--do they work??

this sunkist beverage...very tasty.

ok! they are happy and....they work!

coaster #5: rorschach butterfly

this coaster was made the way you probably did it in nursery or kindergarten. i put some acrylic paint on a square piece of dull green denim--like military denim-- then folded the fabric and pressed on it. then i cut around the shape. i'd definitely like to do  a series of these. they're easy and they're fun. and fabric is great for coasters.

coaster #3: my father

coaster #3 is a photo coaster.
i visited my dad today at his home in Whiting, NJ.

i was going to give a link to its wikipedia page--but here is the whole entry:
Whiting is an unincorporated area in Ocean CountyNew Jersey. It is a section of Manchester Township, New Jersey on the west side of the township. It is in the Eastern Standard time zone with an elevation of 180 ft. It is known for many retirement communities. It was once a train station on the Southern branch of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, a line known for the Blue Comet express.

i found out when i was 38 that my dad's real name was not James; it's Vincenzo.

thanks for taking me out to lunch, dad.
